Athlete of the Month
USATF Minnesota would like to congratulate RJ Alowonle (University of North Carolina) and Heather Miller-Koch (Central Park Track Club) for being chosen as USATF Minnesota athletes of the month for July.
Men – RJ Alowonle, Park High School (Cottage Grove) graduate, ran to a 12th place finish in the 400m hurdle semi-finals at the Olympic Trials with a time of 50.46 seconds.
Women – Heather Miller-Koch, a St. Cloud State University and Columbus (WI) High School alumnus who competes for New York’s Central Park Track Club, finished second in the Olympic Trials Heptathlon with a point total of 6423, 71 points behind the winner.
USATF Minnesota would like to congratulate Evan McClellon and Ruby Stauber for being chosen as USATF Minnesota athletes of the month for June.
Men – Evan McClellon (Robbinsdale Armstrong High School) won the MSHSL Class AA State Championship in the 100m in 10.51 seconds. During the section championships McClellon ran a Minnesota High School All-Time best with a time of 10.36 seconds.
Women – Ruby Stauber (Wayzata High School) won the MSHSL Class AA State Championship in the 800m, her second in a row, in a time of 2:07.38. Stauber also finished third at the USATF Junior Nationals in a new All-Time Minnesota best in 2:03.43.
USA Track & Field Minnesota would like to congratulate Agnes Esser (Minnesota) & Mason Ferlic (Michigan) for being chosen as USA Track & Field Minnesota athletes of the month for May.
Men – Mason Ferlic (Michigan/Mounds Park Academy): Mason ran an 8:28 3000m steeplechase at the Payton Jordan Invitational and was the Big 10 champion in the steeplechase. He was also the Big 10 5000m champion. He also qualified for the NCAA Championships
Women – Agnes Esser (Minnesota): Esser finished 5th in the Big 10 Discus Throw and finished second at the NCAA DI West Regional. Her throw of 190’ is a new Minnesota school record.
USA Track & Field Minnesota would like to congratulate Maggie Ewen (Arizona State) & Mike Sandle (Minnesota State) for being chosen as USA Track & Field Minnesota athletes of the month for April.
Men – Mike Sandle (Minnesota State/Eden Prairie HS): Mike won the Drake Relays Triple Jump with a jump of 52-8.25, that ranks him #1 in NCAA DII and is 9th in all three NCAA Divisions.
Women – Maggie Ewen (Arizona State/ St. Francis HS): Maggie won the Shot Put in the Duel in the Desert, with a put of 54-10 (ranking 21st in NCAA DI). Maggie is also ranked 7th in the Discus (193-7), and 5th in the Hammer Throw (215-5) in NCAA DI.
USA Track & Field Minnesota would like to congratulate Emily Gapinski (University of St. Thomas) & Sean Donnelly (Minnesota) for being chosen as USA Track & Field Minnesota athletes of the month for March.
Men – Sean Donnelly (Minnesota): Sean won the hammer throw at the Baldy Castillo Invitational with a throw of 74.35m (243-11) – a mark that ranks him first in the NCAA, first in the US and ninth in the world this year.
Women – Emily Gapinski (University of St. Thomas) – Won the NCAA Division III National Championship in the 1 Mile in a time of 4:52.28. She was also on the winning Distance Medley Relay in a time of 11:47.04. Earlier in the month she won the MIAC Mile and 1000m in a meet record time of 2:51.48.
USA Track & Field Minnesota would like to congratulate Jess Lehman (University of Minnesota) & Myles Hunter (Minnesota State) for being chosen as USA Track & Field Minnesota athletes of the month for February.
Men – Myles Hunter (Minnesota State): Myles won the 60m hurdles at the Northern Sun Conference Championships in a time of 7.69, the leading time in DII. His time is also the tied for the 4th fastest across all NCAA Divisions.
Women – Jess Lehman (University of Minnesota): Jess won the Big 10 Conference Pentathlon with a total score of 4,393 points. She won three out of the five events. She was trailing going into the last event (800m) and won that event in a time of 2:10, winning by over 5 seconds and securing her one point victory. Her 4,393 points currently ranks her in 5th in DI.
The Minnesota Association of USA Track & Field is proud to announce that Luke Johnson and Kaitlyn Long are USATF Minnesota's Athletes of the Month for January 2016.
Johnson, a University of Minnesota senior and a Red Wing High School alumnus, is honored for his shot put victory at the Minnesota vs. Wisconsin Dual meet on January 22. Johnson's winning toss of 18.98 meters (62-03.25 ft) was a personal record for the thrower and moves him up to fourth all-time on Minnesota's top-performances list. The mark currently ranks 11th in the nation and third in the Big Ten this year. Johnson also won the shot put title at the Northwest Open and Jack Johnson Invitational in January.
Long, a sophomore at Winona State University from Cottage Grove, Wisconsin (Monona Grove High School), and reigning NCAA Division II national champion in the weight throw is recognized for breaking the NCAA Division II national indoor record in the weight throw with a toss of 22.25 meters (73 ft) at the Saint Mary's Early Birdinal. Long's throw is not only the farthest throw in Division II history but is more than a foot farther than this season's Division I leaders and tops the current Division II charts by nearly seven feet.
